At Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School, some of the art lessons are conducted in the Chinese language โ it was interesting to see students designing their versions of blue and white porcelain (้่ฑ็ท) using recycled bottles and then uploading their designs onto tablets to hand them in. The hybrid teaching modality kept the students engaged, and I like the natural camaraderie as they helped one another to figure things out.
The school also encourages students to explore the โwhyโ behind learning โ see Noemiโs excellent reminder below on how Math is everywhere, and its utility to us in everyday life.

| Minister Chan Chun Sing Sir, it is high time to introduce A.I. concepts, not just coding, into primary and secondary schools because A.I. is already upon us like our MRT systems, self-driving EV cars, etc and even spelling and grammar checks in MS Word. Lack of understanding of A.I. can pose a real danger to personal safety.
Eg. If the mrt cabin display shows City Hall but you are actually at Outram, for your safety you better quickly get out of the train because the central controlling system thinks that there is no train at Outram and might send another train into Outram. Though there are other safety anti-collision measures in place, tragic accidents mostly or always happen when there is a congruence of safety failures. | 15th May 2022 |

Minister Masagos shared during his speech how our community has been and is stepping forward to give back to ensure that no one is left behind and acknowledging our MM Communityโs effort in progressing forward as a Community of Success โ Berdiri Teguh, Melangkah Kukuh. And I echoed Ministerโs message for us to forge closer together as one community towards becoming a community of success.

Gembira rasanya melihat pemimpin-pemimpin masyarakat MM berkumpul untuk mengeratkan lagi silaturrahim serta merakamkan penghargaan sesama kita dan tentunya dalam semangat Syawal, saling memohon kemaafan.

This yearโs Vesak coincides with Hari Raya Puasa. During the Vesak Celebration early this month, I am heartened to see that the Singapore Buddhist Federationๆฐๅ ๅกไฝๆๆปไผ (SBF) is celebrating both Vesak Day and Hari Raya Aidilfitri so that we could share among ourselves the festive joy of these 2 events.
These celebrations remind us of the common values across the different religions, especially in doing good work to help Singaporeans regardless of race, language or religion.
SBF had also presented home electrical appliances and hand sanitisers to the representatives of Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) to be distributed to lower-income families of the Malay-Muslim community.
The practice of Gotong Royong among Singaporeans underpins a strong Singaporean identity and sense of belonging. It inspires each of us to look beyond ourselves and care for others around us. Racial and religious harmony has always been a part of the Singaporean identity and experience. With the further easing of Safe Management Measures, we are glad to be able to celebrate various festive events together once again.
As we celebrate Vesak Day tomorrow, I wish all Buddhists a very happy Vesak Day. Let us pray for harmony & peace for all the humankind on this auspicious day.

As we celebrate Hari Raya this whole month, with the easing of SMM restrictions, we hope that the Hari Raya outfits that the children received, will add to their joy and they get to enjoy the festive delicacies while visiting their extended families and friends.

I got to know Thekchen Choling Singapore Temple when I was serving at Jalan Besar. Together, we initiated and carried out various programs to help needy and vulnerable residents. We worked very well together, and their programs were thoughtful and very community focussed.
I was very happy to be invited back to Thekchen Choling this Vesak Day, to share in their celebrations and to commemorate one of the most significant occasions in the Buddhist calendar. More importantly, it was an occasion to meet many old friends, chat and celebrate the special day with them, in person.
One of the highlights this morning was the unveiling of the Wish-fulfilling Thangka of Shakyamuni Buddha. The colourful intricate tapestry of the Thangka mirrors the richness and diversity of our own social fabric in Singapore, every one of us being a thread in that fabric, but together, much richer and stronger, as a nation.

Yesterday, Quah Jing Wen won our 350th swim Gold at the SEA Games. Amazing record.
Today, our Team Singapore swimmers achieved the 800th medal won in swimming at the SEA Games.
These magnificent milestones are a testament to the strength in depth of Singapore Swimming Association and its ability to anticipate, and keep ahead of the competition.
We have had many legends in the pool, swimmers such as Patricia Chan and Joscelin Yeo, they inspired generations of swimmers with close to 100 medals between them. Today, Joseph Schooling and Quah Zheng Wen have close to 70.
Beyond our current greats, we have many others in the wings. I am confident that just as Pat Chan, Jos Yeo, Ang Peng Siong and Jo Schooling have become legendary household names, we will very soon (maybe even now!) see a whole new generation of top-notch swimmers in Singapore colours.
Here are some of the them:
The redoubtable Gan Ching Hwee missed out on last yearโs Olympics but hunkered down, trained harder, and this evening took the Gold in the 800m Free with some distance to spare. Such is the resilience of our swimmers. Teong Tzen Wei blazed through the 50m Fly in a new Games Record, with Mikkel Lee in second place and a personal record. Quah Jing Wen, still only 21 already has 3 Golds at the Hanoi Games.
Jonathan Tan looks set to dominate the short course sprints, taking the Silver in the 100m Free, just behind Zheng Wen. SEA Games debutant, Letitia Sim snatched a silver yesterday and added a bronze to her tally in 200M breaststroke today.
I am sure they and our other debutants like Adri Zulhimi (19 Years Old) Gabriel Koo (16 Years Old), Mitchell (19 Years old), Bonnie Yeo (18 Years Old) and Chan Zi Yi would have gained much from this experience, learning from the competition and their peers.
Christie Chue (who just won a Gold in the 4x100m Free), Max Ang, Ashley Lim are other names to watch.
Mark these names โ they will be household ones soon!
We still have three more days to go for swimming at this SEA Games - letโs get behind our Swimmers as they push for even more medals!
To borrow a phrase from Jo, letโs all swim fast!

With 13 events and 6 medals, our 8 wushu athletes wrapped up their SEA Games campaign today.
They did brilliantly. This year, a tough SEA Games amidst the various Covid restrictions, saw the team achieve more than the 1 gold and 1 silver won in the 2019 SEA Games ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป
Each of our athletes gave their all in the arena, leaving nothing behind. Their determination and quiet, resolute strength shone all the more brightly as cheers rang loudly in the My Dinh Indoor Games Gymnasium for their opponents.
Congrats to:
โข Chan Jun Kai for clinching ๐ฅ and ๐ฅ in menโs Taijijian and Taijiquan, respectively. He did not let his stomach discomfort stop him from putting up an outstanding performance in Taijijian.
โข Our debutants Kimberly Ong and Zoe Tan for bagging ๐ฅ and ๐ฅ in womenโs Daoshu and Gunshu combined event, respectively. So proud of our young debutants, and am so privileged to have witnessed them in training a few weeks ago.
โข Jowen Lim for taking ๐ฅin Changquan as well as Daoshu and Gunshu combined event each. In the last edition of the Games, he finished sixth in the Changquan event.
I would like to also give a shoutout to Vera Tan and our other debutants - Isabel Chua, Randall Lim and Zeanna Law, for giving your best in the Games. I am sure you will be on the medal podium in no time!

"80% of swimmers like to swim and 20% hate to lose. 95% of the Olympic team is from the 'hate to lose' group"
This was once famously said by Eddie Reese (US Olympic swim coach 2004-8).
We know which group the Quah siblings belong in!
They have an insatiable desire for success. Next stop for them: domination at the Aquatic Palace in Hanoi, at the SEA Games.
They all claim to have been thrown into the pool at a young age and (thankfully for Team Singapore) found joy in swimming competitively.
Between the three of them, they have already garnered a total of 4 Gold medals at this SEA Games (on opening night alone).
Jing Wen, the baby of the trio, but already a seasoned competitor, has been making great strides in her lane. She will no doubt one day be on the same platform as her Olympian siblings. She has been brilliant in her events so far.
Zheng Wen, has defended his 100m backstroke title with some ease, bringing his total medal tally at the SEA Games just shy of 40! He is now also an excellent mentor not just to his sisters but to the rest of the TeamSG swim team.
Ting Wen would be first to admit as much โ being much of a perfectionist - she draws on Zheng Wen's bravery and willingness to try new things to embolden herself and face challenges head on. It has worked โ she has defended her 100M Freestyle event for the 5th time since she first won it.
I have met and chatted with them all โ they are focussed, single minded, and resolute competitors. But above everything else, they are really nice people, wanting to give their absolute best, and see the Singapore flag hoisted high, in tandem with our anthem being played.
Well done Zheng Wen, Jing Wen and Ting Wen again for a great showing for Team Singapore in the pool this evening. Good luck for the rest of SEA Games! Go get them!!

Vesak Day is one of the most significant and blessed occasions in Buddhism. It commemorates the birth and enlightenment of Gautama Buddha, and is a time of joy, peace and reflection for devotees.
I am glad that we are able to come back closer together as a community to celebrate Vesak Day. I joined Zu Lin Temple in a meaningful celebration yesterday, including the โThree-Step, One-Bowโ (ไธๆญฅไธๆ) ceremony, which took place for the first time in two years! During this ceremony, devotees take three steps before prostrating themselves on the ground with their palms facing up, while chanting a homage to Buddha. The ritual reminds them of the difficult journey towards enlightenment.
This is an important milestone as we move forward and certainly a very happy occasion for all indeed. I look forward to the return of more of such events where we can come together to celebrate and commemorate festivals that we hold dear.

| Grace Fu |  | Technological changes are underway to better separate plastics from general waste, and chemically recycle plastics for new uses. I saw some of these in use in the Netherlands. These technologies could be game-changers for reducing and reusing plastics globally, including in Singapore.
My visits to the National Test Centre Circular Plastics (NTCP), Omrin Ecopark Di Wierde, and the Shell Technology Centre Amsterdam were full of useful learning points for our own plans to recycle more plastic waste, and our journey towards a circular economy for plastics.

| Grace Fu |  | Singaporeans love online shopping, but what we donโt love is the sheer amount of single-use packaging waste it creates.
One of the SG Eco Fund recipients I met recently, Mykilio, came up with an excellent solution. They are developing mycelium-based materials for packaging and furniture out of waste byproducts such as wood chips, coffee grounds, and discarded newspaper and cardboard boxes. These waste byproducts are collected from businesses and residential districts, ensuring greater circularity.
Mykilio, which takes its name from the Greek word for mycelium, also organises workshops with community groups to create awareness of their mycelium-based materials. Hope to see more of such creative solutions to common problems!

| Grace Fu |  | Visited the Netherlands, which among other things, is known for using polders and dykes for coastal protection. Sea-level rise poses an existential threat for a low-lying island nation like Singapore, so our visit was a good opportunity to learn more about what other countries have done to secure their own coastlines.
It was a productive visit, with the sites at Maeslantkering and Katwijk aan Zee offering several insights for Singapore. I was pleased to meet Nationale-Nederlanden (NN) Investment Partners, with whom I exchanged ideas on mobilising finance for #ClimateChange adaptation as well as Environmental Social Governance (ESG) reporting. More sustained support from the private sector will be needed to achieve our transition to a green economy.

Much also depends on where the future economy is headed, as the future of work is intrinsically linked to the economy. The global economy is undergoing tremendous change, and so too the rate of change of skills.
To help workers and improve their lives, companies, unions and governments need to work in close partnership. I spoke about this at the ASEAN Future Of Work Conference and the HR Tech Festival Asia today.
With the rapid pace of change, we must redouble efforts to make the most of new possibilities. With mutual understanding and shared goals between workers and employers, we can change practices and transform our economy in ways that benefit all parties.

In light of the challenges posed by the pandemic and geopolitical uncertainties, we discussed the importance of stepping up trade, people-to-people and infrastructure connectivity for post-pandemic recovery and growth.
Infrastructure development is key. This includes both sustainable infrastructure and digital infrastructure.
We need to encourage investments to support the regionโs immense needs.
Singapore stands ready to work with the ASEAN+3 region to develop innovative financing tools to plug Asiaโs infrastructure financing gap.

Visited Cyber Security Agency of Singapore - CSA recently to encourage officers to keep up with the important work they do.
One of the most frequent words that the officers used was โhealthโ. Our CSA officers serve with a sense of mission, and truly believe that robust cybersecurity is critical to the good โhealthโ of any organisation, and our nation. I fully concur with that too.
In our cyber ecosystem, CSA is Singaporeโs cyber defender โ they do this by being the regulator, as well as the enabler. While ensuring that Singaporeโs 11 Critical Information Infrastructure (e.g. in Water and Land Transport) adhere to high standards of security, CSA also empowers our businesses and people to protect themselves. Because everyone must play their part for our cyberspace to be secure.
And in its short seven years of existence, CSA has been steadily making progress, such as by providing cybersecurity toolkits for businesses.

Celebrated the achievements of Singapore's tech leaders last Friday at the Tech Leader Awards organised by Singapore Computer Society (SCS).
As the world becomes increasingly digitalised, Singapore's pipeline of tech talents will need to have a wide range of deep skills.
There are three particular areas that Singapore could scale new heights in, to create impacts far beyond our shores. They are: Connectivity, Cloud and Cybersecurity.
Hence, I am glad that the Awards recognised people in some of these areas too. In cybersecurity, tech investor Eddie Chau founded cybersecurity firms that gained international recognition. He also plays a mentor figure for Singaporean startups.
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Professor Wen Yonggang developed a cloud AI platform to optimise and automate data centre operations.

Our mothers will always love and worry about us, no matter how old we are.
In my Mother's Day interview with Channel 8, I recalled how I, as a teen, had made my Mum worried because I was obsessed with playing basketball.
So much so that I failed Additional Math during my first semester in Sec 3.
I remembered feeling scared. I didnโt dare tell Mum as I was afraid that she would stop me from playing the sport.
But, I guess mothers always have their ways of finding out. Mum quickly intervened by arranging tuition for me. Thanks to her help, I pulled up my socks, and managed to pass the subject by the end of the year.
Mum continued to show her love and concern for me at every stage of my life โ when I went for overseas studies, started my family, and when I entered politics...
As a mother myself, I know how she feels, and I am most thankful for her.

Most grateful to two extraordinary caregivers, Ann Chong SiJun and friends and Yasmin Nisha, for their sharing. Their stories give courage and strength to other caregivers, as well as inspire all of us to stand in solidarity with them. You really are our everyday heroes!
As part of PAP Women's Wing's Mother Day tradition, funds were also raised for the vulnerable and disadvantaged through a bazaar held at NTUC Centre and fundraising efforts by our MPs and activists in the Central District.

She practices yoga, and covers Olympic-distance triathlons (10km run, 40km cycle & 1.5km swim) under 3hrs.

Three SPF officers rescued an elderly woman from a burning house in Yio Chu Kang last month.
SC/SGT Choong K-Ron, SGT Tan Wei Jie, and SC Muhammad Amru Abd Rahman were patrolling nearby when they were alerted to the fire.
SC/SGT Choong and SGT Tan braved the heat and thick smoke to rescue the 86-year-old, while SC Rahman managed the crowd outside. SC/SGT Choong recalled fire safety tips he had learnt, and suggested to stay low and crawl through the smoke.

| Lawrence Wong |  | Shanti Pereira set our new national record and won her second women's 200m gold medal at the 31st SEA Games today - seven years after she won her first on home soil in 2015.
I was at the National Stadium back then, when she secured Singapore's first 200 metres sprinting gold medal in the 28th SEA Games. We celebrated and I remembered vividly her joy of achievement.
My warmest congratulations to Shanti - our sprint queen, you have done us proud!

| Lawrence Wong |  | Visited our heartland merchants and hawkers today at Tampines West! Happy to see that many are on board the Community Development Council (CDC) Vouchers Scheme.
Many of us are concerned about the impact of rising prices on daily expenses. We are not alone - prices are increasing worldwide due to the Ukraine war, and the impact of the pandemic.
That is why we are taking immediate action to help Singaporeans cope โ today, every Singaporean household will receive another $100 worth of CDC vouchers. We are also disbursing S&CC and U-Save rebates in July and October, and January next year. And we will issue more CDC Vouchers in the next two years too.
We will continue to monitor the global situation, and will not hesitate to take further action to help households and businesses if the situation worsens.
Update: As of 9pm today, around 230,000 households have claimed their CDC vouchers! If you haven't done so, you may do it at go.gov.sg/cdcv :)

| Lee Hsien Loong |  | Went on a #jalanjalan at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Centre today, part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. It is home to some iconic aircraft and spacecraft, as well as interesting aviation and space-related artifacts and exhibits.
On my previous visit to Washington D.C. in March, Gan Kim Yong signed the Artemis Accords, making Singapore the 18th country to join this international agreement that establishes principles for the peaceful and sustainable exploration of space.
The space sector has untold potential and possibilities. Many space technologies have found applications here on earth, like the GPS in our smartphones and cars.
Singapore may not be a space-faring nation, but we are doing R&D in space-related capabilities to support key pillars of our economy such as aviation and maritime. | Masagos Zulkifli |  | Singapore is ageing rapidly, and we need to continue building a community that supports seniors and their caregivers.
My colleagues at the Agency for Integrated Care - AIC Singapore (AIC) have been at the frontlines, working hard to help seniors receive the care they need. 52-year-old Iskandar Bin Safi'i is one such officer. Iskandar conducts home visits to seniors on a regular basis, and shares with them the government schemes applicable to them. Beyond his day-to-day duties, Iskandar has often gone the extra mile to assist seniors in need.
Iskandar once helped a senior with her deceased sisterโs funeral arrangements, as she had no family members to seek help from. He also helped an 80-year-old senior, Mdm Wee, who lives alone, to replace her faulty light and to repair a leaking sink. While at Mdm Weeโs house, Iskandar also noticed some potential household issues she may experience in the near future, and made a note to monitor and render assistance to her again.

We need to recognize the urgency and seriousness of the other 50% of the ageing problem. The need to increase birth rates. Without a healthy birth rate, there will be less children to care for their ageing parents and triggering a bigger demand for aged care.

| Masagos Zulkifli |  | Alhamdulillah, it was great to finally host my annual Hari Raya Get-Together physically again this year. It had been a much-anticipated event, with SM Teo Chee Hean in attendance, as we renew old ties and forge new ones in-person.
At the event, I emphasised on the need to embrace lifelong learning. I urged the Malay/Muslim (MM) community to continuously seek new knowledge and competencies, so as to build a stronger future amidst the changing global outlook. As we journey to become a Community of Success, I am also glad that more volunteers and mentors are stepping forward to give back to the community to ensure that no one gets left behind. I highlighted the efforts made by outstanding individuals such as Dr Muhammad Nadjad Abdul Rahim dan Associate Professor Yusuf Ali who have contributed to the healthcare community by leading research, publishing scientific papers and making important scientific discoveries to help practitioners understand diseases affecting the community in Singapore.
I also took the opportunity to encourage MM community to do their part to take care of themselves, as well as the well-being of their loved ones. This includes regularly exercising, eating in moderation and going for checkups to ensure that our health is in top form. I announced that @Parl Sec Rahayu is leading a new health initiative,Saham Kesihatan Programme, which aims to reduce chronic diseases within our community. Lastly, I am glad to also announce the expansion of the Sheikh Isa Semait scholarships for outstanding madrasah students to pursue studies at prestigious Islamic universities around the world. $1 million has been set aside for this scholarship programme. Alhamdulillah, saya gembira dapat mengadakan majlis tahunan Perjumpaan Hari Raya secara fizikal pada tahun ini. Majlis ini yang sememangnya amat dinanti-nantikan, turut diserikan dengan kehadiran Menteri Kanan Teo Chee Hean, di mana kita dapat menghidupkan semula tali silaturahmi sambil menjalin ikatan baru antara satu sama lain.
Sewaktu majlis tersebut, saya telah menekankan tentang pentingnya pembelajaran sepanjang hayat. ASEAN is a close-knit community. While culturally diverse, we share similar aspirations and hope for our people and nation. We are a culturally diverse community of more than 600 million people.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also brought us closer together as we share information, resources and experience. Health Ministries, in particular, went through the same baptism of fire. These are linkages and ties that we want to build on. In our formal and informal conversations, we inevitably share the troubles, pressures and challenges that we respectively went through.
Over various meetings these 2 days, a common conviction runs through โ that regional health cooperation is key to enhance our collective preparedness and response to pandemics, whether for new waves of COVID-19 or a new virus.

| Ong Ye Kung |  | We have been seeing an uptick in COVID-19 cases in recent days. Some members of the public have written to me expressing concerns, while others wonder if it will trigger changes to Safe Management Measures (SMMs).
I thought it would be useful to share an update on this before the long weekend ahead.
The community cases are rising, but not doubling every few days. So there is no evidence of a new wave. The rise is also expected, given that we opened up social activities almost fully since 26 April.
Most cases show mild symptoms and recover uneventfully at home. Our hospitals and ICUs are also not seeing a rise of severe COVID-19 cases.
With strong resilience to the virus due to vaccinations and recovery from past infections, we should be able to see through this uptick of cases, without any adjustments to current SMMs.
Of course, we will continue to monitor closely, as things can change very quickly, especially if a new variant was to emerge. So even as we enjoy this period of respite, we must not let our guard down and should continue to exercise personal and social responsibility at all times. | 12th May 2022 |

| Thank you for the baggage process explanation. In both your posts, you essentially focused on Terminal 1 operations. Have you had a look at Terminal 3 (SIA flights) operations or was this conveniently not shown to you?
From what I have heard the operations at T3 are rather messy with increasing rates of mishandled baggage and departure flight delays. Was this ever brought to your attention?
You touched on arrival baggage. There is also some feedback from three of my friends who travelled recently that they only obtained their checked-in bags 1 hour or more after the flight arrival time. This is way beyond the baggage presentation timings that have been in place for all these years. While the sample size may not be statistically significant, it is worrying when the various touch points at Changi Airport are working well except for the portion on baggage handling.
I would presume that these issues are related to the shortage of manpower (as with many other industries in Sg) and possibly ground equipment. What are the 2 ground handlers, especially Sats, doing to resolve these issues before further flight increases? Will passengers continue to face such problems when the next peak period starts at the end of this month?

| Tan See Leng |  | I thank DPM Heng Swee Keat and SMS Zaqy Mohamad for their thoughtful and inspiring speeches at the HR Tech Festival Asia 2022. I echo their call for collaboration, and would like to share three areas in which MOM is working closely with tripartite partners on.
First, to ride on this wave of growth and seize opportunities, we need HR leaders and professionals to support businesses in their transformation journey, and help employees chart their way forward. On this end, I am pleased that Workforce Singapore - WSG will be launching the Career Conversion Programme (CCP) for Human Capital Professionals to reskill existing HR professionals for more strategic roles, and support mid-career conversions to the HR profession.
Second, the hybrid work environment is here to stay. With flexible work arrangements (FWAs), workers can better balance their work and personal commitments, which means employers will have a happier and more productive workforce. To fully reap the benefits of FWAs, I urge workers and employers to establish mutual understanding and trust.
Third, our platform workers provide us with valuable services, and we need to work out the changes required to give them greater protection, social security and representation.

Good Friday this year was in fact unusual. It was the first time in 31 years that we had major observances by the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths at the same time. Plus several Indian ethnic communities celebrated their own New Years on Friday or the day before. **
Each has much meaning, and having them all observed at the same time in our small island carries added meaning.
One for the old days: the photo shows part of the large crowd taking part in the candlelight procession at the St Joseph's Church of the Portuguese Mission in Victoria Street on Good Friday night in 1959.
** On Thursday, we had the Tamil New Year (Puthandu) and start of the Sikh New Year (Vesakhi). The New Year for our Malayalees (Vishu) and Bengalis (Pohela Boishakh) came on Friday. The Jewish community celebrated Passover from Friday evening. All while Muslims observed the month-long Ramadan.
